Harry Mould wins the prestigious Alfred Fagon award 2025 for the Pitlochry Festival Theatre production of The Brenda Line
Pitlochry Festival Theatre is proud to share the news that Edinburgh based playwright Harry Mould has won the prestigious 2025 Alfred Fagon Award for the Theatre’s production of The Brenda Line
The annual award, which is in its 29th year, celebrates new plays by black British writers.
Mould was announced as the winner of the award at National Theatre’s Dorfman Theatre on December 5th.
The Brenda Line tells the story of one late evening in a middle–of–nowhere town as Karen walks into a call centre to begin her first night shift as the youngest Samaritan in the country. She’s decided she needs to help people, and maybe write a best-selling novel in the process, but what she hadn’t expected was Anne – her elderly shift partner, and the evening’s resident ‘Brenda’…
Their debut play is about women, compassion and what it means to be listened to, and is loosely inspired by the real-life events in Mould’s mother's life whilst volunteering with the Samaritans in North Wales.
Harry Mould said
“I was so proud to have been longlisted for the Alfred Fagon Prize alongside such brilliant talents, so winning is a surreal delight. The Brenda Line is my first play, and the way it was embraced by Pitlochry Festival Theatre and its generous and loyal audiences is what gave me the confidence to even submit the script to the award. To have it recognised in this way is a real honour and a vote of confidence that’s already had such a huge impact on me as an emerging writer. "
Alan Cumming, Artistic Director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre said:
“We are thrilled for Harry and are so pleased The Brenda Line continues to have a life it richly deserves after premiering in our 2024 Summer Season. Our audiences were deeply moved by this vital story and we are excited to see where it goes next. “
The Alfred Fagon Award is supported by the Peggy Ramsay Foundation and named after the actor and playwright Alfred Fagon.
